All instrumentalists are welcome to join us for this workshop (A=440) as long as people can blend their sound. Past workshops have seen plenty of Medieval and Renaissance winds – recorders, double reeds, brass etc. and viols, but also modern winds, violins, cellos, mandolins. People will be seated in instrumental family groups and there will be opportunities for people to play through the pieces on consorts of related instruments.
The Harmonice Musices Odhecaton (One Hundred Harmonic Songs) is an anthology of polyphonic secular songs by Ottaviano Petrucci. It was published in Venice in 1501, and was the first book of polyphonic music ever to be printed using movable type. Many of the compositions are anonymous, but those which are not include works by some of the most famous composers of the time, such as Josquin des Pres, Alexander Agricola, Jacob Obrecht, Johannes Okeghem and Antoine Busnois. For this workshop, Lizzie will take a look at a few of the most famous pieces from the manuscript, alongside some that perhaps deserve to be better known.
Lizzie will also bring printed books about the music we’re covering today and more, which will retail at £12. There’s a special offer for workshop participants to buy this for £6 (limited to one copy each). She’ll also bring other editions and CDs to buy.

Bolton Parish Church Hall (formerly the Old Grammar School) is a 10 minute walk from Bolton Bus/Rail Interchange, and is close to the town centre. The Hall is next to the church, and is accessed from Silverwell Street at the junction with Princess Street (which is one-way). Once inside the church grounds, follow the road past the main church car park on your left – the entrance to the hall’s car park is on the right just past the hall. The hall used to be the There is disabled parking next to the front door of the hall. The church car park may be used if the hall car park is full.

Please book as soon as possible – apply by 26 September to benefit from the early bird discount. All applications should be received by 3 October so we can prepare sufficient scores for all participants (please contact us if you can only apply after this date).

The Tutor
Lizzie Gutteridge played violin and clarinet from an early age, and completed a BA in music at Durham University. She took up the shawm as part of the historical re-enactment movement to re-form Waites bands throughout the country. The shawm is now one of her main instruments, along with bagpipes, recorders, curtals and fiddles. She performs up and down the country, in and out of historical costume, as a member of Blondel and the York Waites.
