Welcome to the web site of the North West Early Music Forum (NWEMF). We are the first of the regional forums founded in 1977 created for the study and enjoyment of a historically informed approach to the performance of mostly pre-classical music. Our members are drawn from amateur and professional musicians, many of whom live in the North West of England and North Wales. To find out more about becoming a member, click here.
What do we do?
Our main focus is on the practical study of music through day workshops. These are held over a wide area from the South Lake District to North East Wales. We also provide details of other early music events in the North West and surrounding regions that we think our members might be interested in.
Our members’ newsletter is published online 5 times a year in our members’ area, and we also send out a monthly email with news of upcoming workshops and other early music events and concerts in and around the region. Sign up to our mailing list to receive regular email updates about NWEMF events.
For our workshops, reference to ‘soft instruments’ includes recorders, curtals and strings (viols and modern strings), possibly sackbuts, but not usually cornets or ‘raspy’ winds, eg crumhorns. Reference to ‘low recorders’ means those which are low enough to double voices at the same sounding pitch. So with a normal choral piece even the highest recorders should sound a middle C (or lower) as the lowest note. All our workshops are A=440 pitch, unless otherwise stated, and so modern string players are welcome to come along, as are trombones and bassoons. For other instruments, please check before booking.
