Lute song concert in Chester 7:30 5th August, St. Werburgh’s Church, Chester
Deborah Catterall, accompanied by Hugh Cherry, is giving a concert of lute/archlute songs and solos from Shakespeare’s time, including songs from his plays and other songs by John Dowland and Purcell. The concert will include 5 songs from the plays, including ‘O mistresse mine’, ‘Where the bee sucks’ and ‘Full fathom Five’, and several of Dowland’s songs including ‘I saw my lady weep’ and ‘It was a time when silly bees’. The Purcell songs (with the archlute) include ‘Bess of Bedlam’ and one of the songs from ‘The Fairy Queen’. The concert (part of a series in the church) is free (no tickets) with a retiring collection (and tea/coffee and wine) and is quite short – around one hour, with no interval. Here is a map showing the church (CH1 1QJ), which is only a few minutes from the town centre, and a bit more than 5 minutes walk form the railway station. There is very little parking at the church, but plenty in the town centre, which is quite close – see map below.
